The French word renaissance rinascimento in Italian means rebirth and defines the period as one of cultural revival and renewed interest in classical antiquity after the centuries labeled the Dark Ages by Renaissance humanists. Various events and dates of the 17th century, such as the conclusion of the European Wars of Religion in 1648, have been proposed for the end of the Renaissance. The increase in trade during the early Renaissance enhanced these characteristics. Renaissance Sculpture Masterpieces Early Sculpture of the 15th century. Lorenzo Ghiberti. The beginnings of Renaissance Sculpture as an art form sprang from the commissioning of two doors for the Baptistery in Florence. The artist tasked for this work was the local metalworker Lorenzo Ghiberti 1378-1455. Ghiberti had won a competition for the first door to be completed in bronze which was to be a replacement for an existing wooden door. The success of Ghibertis first effort resulted in the Guild of Florentine Merchants commissioning him for the second set of doors these are famously referre. The term Italian Renaissance has not gone unchallenged its meaning and boundaries have aroused much controversy. From the 1340s the idea of rebirth was a commonplace in critical writing. Humanism does not by itself comprise the whole of the early Italian Renaissance, which should also be understood as a general intense efflorescence of all the arts and intellectual life. From the time of Dante and Giotto through that of the great trio of Donatello, Brunelleschi, and Masaccio at the beginning of the 15th century and on to the age of the High Renaissance, these years present a picture of extraordinary cultural power. Early renaissance paintings and decoration began at the beginning of the century, around 1401 with the creation of the bronze doors for the Baptistry of St. Sphill51. Others, such as Piero della Francesca's work in Arezzo and Benozzo Gozzoli's Chapel of the Magi in Florence, have been reproduced countless times.
